05 November 2018
Food & Retail Regulatory round-up w/e 5 November. Personalised pricing, minimum wage rates, and digital service tax.

Important updates

Personalised pricing in the spotlight: The Competition and Markets Authority and the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) have announced that they are to undertake research into the use and impact of personalised pricing. The research will explore how widespread this practice is, how businesses are applying it through different mediums like search engines, apps or comparison tools and the extent to which personalised pricing is preventing shoppers getting the best deals. View >

Budget 2018

As predicted, last Monday's Budget brought a number of changes to the retail sector. The Chancellor cracked down on the online tech giants and gave a helping hand to the high street businesses. Further detail is expected when the Finance Bill is published on 7th November 2018.

  • The big news is that from 1st April 2020, a digital services tax will apply to certain revenue of social media platforms and online marketplaces. A further Government consultation on the operation of the regime will be published in the next few weeks.
  • For two years from 1st April 2019, there will be a temporary 30% reduction in business rates for retail properties with a rateable value below £51,000. The Government estimates this will benefit up to 90% of retail properties, meaning businesses with larger retail spaces will foot the business rates bill.
